Independence is a large city in Jackson County, Missouri, USA, situated on the south bank of the Missouri River. It is one of the largest cities in the state. Many know this city as the "Queen City of the Trails", and a lot of tourists come to see great architecture and numerous museums of Independence. The city is located 10 miles east of Kansas City in western Missouri. It was founded on March 29, 1827, and named for the Declaration of Independence. U.S. President Harry S. Truman grew up in Independence. Today, its home is part of the Harry S. Truman National Historic Site. The city is also home to Blue River Community College and Graceland University. Points of interest in Independence include Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum, Owens-Rogers Museum, Chicago and Alton Depot, Jackson County Jail and Marshal's House, the Harvey M. Vaile Mansion, and Independence Visitors' Center. Interstate 70, Interstate 470, Interstate 435, U.S. Route 24, and U.S. Route 40 serve the area.
