The city of Fitchburg, nicknamed the "City by the River" or "The Burg", is located in northern Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. It is one of the largest cities in the county. The city is an educational hub, and home to Fitchburg State University. It was settled by Europeans in 1730, incorporated as a town in 1764, and as a city in 1872. The city was originally a part of Lunenburg and named for John Fitch. It is bordered by Lunenburg to the east, Westminster to the west, Ashby to the north, Leominster to the south, and Ashburnham to the northwest. Fitchburg Municipal Airport is situated to the southeast of the city's center.
