It was founded by Reading Wood Black in 1853 as Encina and renamed in 1856. The city is considered an important educational, economic, and social center of the county. It is home to Uvalde County Fairplex and Southwest Texas Junior College, as well as a few attractions, including Briscoe-Garner Museum, Cook's Slough Sanctuary, Uvalde Memorial Park, City of Uvalde Town Square, and so on.
