The Bahamas is a country and a group of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean. With the official name of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, this country can be found right between the state of Florida of the United States of America and the island country of Cuba. The country is a part of the region known as the West Indies which also includes the Antilles, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and others. The total area of the Bahamas is close to 5.38 thousand square miles and the country is situated on about 700 small and medium islands, with the biggest one being the island of Andros. The city of Nassau is the largest and the capital city of the country. It is situated on the island of New Providence and is the main administrative, legislative, commercial, cultural, and educational center of the Bahamas.

The country has the general area estimated to exceed 500 square miles. It is the total area where the islands of the Bahamas are spread around. Overwhelming majority of the islands are inhabited, with only about three dozens of them having no people living there. The surface of all the islands is quite flat and has almost no hills. Thus, the average elevation of the country is only slightly above 50 feet, varying from 47 to 66 feet. The top of Hill Como, or Mount Alvernia, is considered to be the highest point of the Bahamas and it is situated on Cat Island. Administratively, the country is divided into 31 districts plus the capital city district of Nassau. The largest cities of the country include Freeport, West End, Lucaya, San Andros, Cooper's Town, George Town, High Rock, Clarence Town, and others.
