Taunton, nicknamed The Silver City or The Christmas City, is a city in the state of Massachusetts, United States, located on the Taunton River, 19 miles northeast of Providence, Rhode Island, and 38 miles south of Boston. It is the seat of Bristol County. Interstate 495 and U.S. Route 44 serve the area. It was incorporated as a town on September 3, 1639, and as a city in 1864, named for the town in Somerset, South West England. Taunton is one of the largest cities by area in the state. There are many historic districts, parks, museums, art galleries, and other points of interest in the city, including the Hopewell Mills District, Reed and Barton Complex, the Taunton Green Historic District, Taunton Public Library, St. Mary's Church, Pilgrim Congregational Church, Massasoit State Park, Boyden Park, Old Colony History Museum, and Watson Pond State Park. Taunton was used as a filming location in Martin Scorsese's film Shutter Island.
