Tallahassee is /not/ a large city; it's barely a city at all, but for being Florida's capitol [sic] and being incorporated as such (both being founded to be the seat of government and as a city, for which there is no legal/quantifiable definition, kinda like 'planet' 20 years ago). it's name means 'abandoned village' or 'empty field' in Cherokee, because even they had moved away by the time White Man arrived.
it is also /not/ a center of business. it is most famous for FSu and its football and other Sports properties. Springtime Tallahassee was created entirely as a brown-nose to the legislature, celebrating it, not spring, in the mid-70s which was considering moving the capitol to a better location, and local government threw in like a 99-year, $1 lease (or something) of land on which to build a new mid-rise capitol building as a bri-- i mean, for good measure. other festivals are sort of spin-offs, some of which, i believe, are entirely private endeavors.
despite being fifth most populous, it's first in most dangerous and economic disparity.
it's a small city, large(-ish) town of around 150K, about a third of which are 'transient'/temporary residents – students at the two universities mentioned.
