The State Library of New South Wales is an important educational establishment and also one of the largest libraries in the Australian continent. The facility is located in a beautiful classic building at Macquarie Street, which is in the central part of Sydney in New South Wales, known also as the Sydney Central Business District. The spectacular building of the State Library can be found right near Royal Botanic Gardens which is the very historic and the most touristy part of the city. The facility is also known as one of the oldest libraries of the whole continent, as well as one of the most visited libraries in Australia. The library was established about 190 years ago and received a status of an open public library by a special Governmental Act dated by 1936. The collection of the State Library of NSW is estimated to account for about 5 million items, with over 2 million books, 1.2 million microfilms, about 1 million photos, and other valuable items. About 10 percent of the library collection consists of historical manuscripts and handwritten books which are considered to be of the highest historical importance on the national level. In addition to that, many of the items from the NSW State Library collection are on the New South Wales State Heritage Register. The library has a few rooms and halls which played a significant role in the history of the Australian state.
