The cathedral was constructed in the mid 16th century to commemorate the numerous military victories of Ivan the Terrible. Originally, the cathedral was named The Trinity Church and the Basil Cathedral was actually only one of the numerous churches in the area. The domes of the cathedral have a wonderful and really interesting architectural decision, which represents the flames of fire rising to the skies. The church was lucky not to be destroyed by the Soviet regimen in Russia and was assigned to be a museum. It is still a museum and a part of the Kremlin historical site which is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
