The city is a large settlement located in a beautiful valley between the green hills of the surrounding mountain chains covered by spectacular green forests. The city can be found approximately in the middle of the country and the distance from San José to the border between Costa Rica and Nicaragua is about 45 miles whereas the border between Costa Rica and Panama is located about 60 miles south east of the city.

The largest neighborhoods of San José include the towns of Desamparados, San Pedro, Ipís de Goicoechea, Alajuelita, Escazu, San Rafael de Escazú, Santa Ana, and others. There are also two quite large satellite cities of San José, Cartago, and Alajuela, which can be found to the south east and to the north west of the city respectively.
