Considered to be the oldest bridge across the Dnieper River in the Ukrainian capital, the Patona bridge (Mist Patona, Міст ім. Патона) is named after one of the most known Ukrainian scientists and engineers Evgeny Paton. He is considered a creator of the revolutionary idea of using a solid all-welding structure instead of the more common riveted bridge design. The bridge was opened after World War II and now plays a role as the main transportation route of Kyiv. The bridge has a total length of 1,543 meters (5,062 ft) and a width of 21 meters (69 ft). It was opened to the public on 5 November 1953.
