Panathenaic Stadium (Παναθηναϊκό Στάδιο) is a stadium in Athens, Greece. It was constructed for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. It is also the only stadium in the world built completely of marble. The stadium has a capacity of 45,000 people. It was renovated in 1896 by Anastasios Metaxas. Panathenaic Stadium hosted the 1906 Intercalated Games, the opening ceremony of the 1997 World Championships in Athletics, the 2004 Summer Olympics, and the opening ceremony of the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games. It also hosts concerts and other events. The stadium is located 4 kilometers southeast of the city center.
