The city is known as the least populated state capital. It was incorporated as a city in 1895 and named after the city in southern France. The city is home to the Vermont College of Fine Arts. It is a small cultural center with numerous points of interest, such as College Hall, Vermont State House, Montpelier City Hall, Kellogg-Hubbard Library, Saint Augustine Church, Hubbard Park, and the Vermont History Museum.
