Monroe is a large city nicknamed "Twin Cities of Northeast Louisiana" (with West Monroe), in northern Louisiana, United States, located on the Ouachita River. It is the seat of Ouachita Parish. Monroe is the main city of the Monroe metropolitan statistical area as well as one of the largest cities in the state. It was incorporated as a city in 1906 and named for the steamboat "James Monroe". The city is an important economic, cultural, and educational center in the region. It is home to a few colleges and universities including the University of Louisiana Monroe, Louisiana Delta Community College, and McCann School of Business & Technology.
