After Floyd's death, protests against incidents of police brutality, especially towards black people, spread nationwide and internationally. It is estimated that more than 15 million people participated in the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests in the country. Outside the store where Floyd was killed quickly became a makeshift memorial. The intersection of Chicago Ave between 37th and 39th Streets was designated as "George Perry Floyd Jr. Place" by the Minneapolis City Council on September 18, 2020.
