Everglades is a wetland in southern Florida, United States. It has a total area of 7,800 square miles (20,000 km2). It is bordered by Florida Bay to the south and the Gulf of Mexico to the southwest. Sawgrass prairies, mangrove swamps, red, black and white mangrove trees, and pine forests can be found across the region. The area was originally inhabited by the Calusa and the Tequesta people before Europeans came. Everglades is home to over 350 bird species and a variety of animals, including hawks, owls, alligators, gray foxes, river otters, and bobcats, as well as several endangered species like the Florida panther, American crocodile, etc. Everglades National Park is located in the southwestern part of the region. It was established on December 6, 1947.
