Chornobyl or Chernobyl (Чорнобиль) is a dead town in Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, northern Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine, located 90 kilometers north of the city. It became tragically famous in April 1986 when the Chernobyl atomic station exposure happened causing the release of radioactive substances into the air. Today, the town is almost empty, with a few dozen people coming there to see how things are going on, or to bring the locals who want to visit the exclusion zone. There is a monument in the town, Monument to Those Who Saved the World (Пам'ятник Тим, хто врятував Світ). It is dedicated to the firefighters who died putting out the fire at the plant and to the liquidators who cleaned up after the accident.
