Amarillo is a large city situated in northern Texas, USA. Amarillo is an old city known before as Oneida and established about 150 years ago as a settlement for farmers who had their numerous ranches in the area. However shortly after the town was renamed to Amarillo (as well as a small creek and a small lake nearby) as there is a large number of small yellow flowers growing in the area in springtime (amarillo means yellow in Spanish). In the mid 20th century there was a large air military base built in the city which gave more jobs and helped the city to expand. Today, the population of Amarillo is close to 200,000 people with the number of residents of the metropolitan area close to 310,000 people. Amarillo is known as "Helium Capital of the World" as there are a few companies producing helium.
