It was established by Alexander St. Clair-Abrams in 1880 and has a total area of 13.96 sq mi (36.17 km2). It is the seat of Lake County. The name of the city is derived from a surname which is very popular in Portugal. It is a center of water transportation, situated between Lake Eustis and Lake Dora. The Tavares Seaplane Base and U.S. Route 441 serve the area.
