The city of Schenectady is the seat of Schenectady County, in New York, United States. It is located in the eastern part of the state and has a total area of 10.98 sq mi (28.43 km2). The city was settled in 1661 and incorporated in 1798. The city took its name from the Mohawk word "skahnéhtati" which means "beyond the pines". Interstate 890, Schenectady Station, and Schenectady County Airport serve the city. There are two major businesses in Schenectady: General Electric and the American Locomotive Company. Price Chopper Supermarkets and the New York Lottery are also based in the city.
