The city of Rome is situated in the middle of New York State, United States. It is located in Oneida County, about 17 miles northwest of Utica and 43 miles east of Syracuse. Nicknamed "The Copper City", Rome produced approximately 10-percent of all copper in the country during the Industrial Revolution. It was incorporated in 1870. Rome is the second-largest city by area in the state, with a total area of 75.7 square miles.
