The Plaza Mayor, originally called the "Plaza del Arrabal", is one of the central historic squares of Madrid, the capital of Spain. It was built at the end of the 16th century and used as the main market. The square has nine entrance gates and the Arco de Chuchilleros (Arch of Catlers) located on the southwestern corner of the square, is the most well-known. In modern times it serves tourist and cultural purposes as well as a meeting point. It is used as a market square, as an area for shopping, cultural events, festivals, walking around, and so on. You can see the bronze statue of King Philip III (Estatua Felipe III) by Jean Boulogne and Pietro Tacca at the square. Plaza Mayor (Main Square) is also very close to Puerta del Sol which is another notable square and one of the best-known places in the city. There are "terrazas" (outdoor cafes) in the summer and spring, and you can find many restaurants and bars in the area.
