It is a Grade II-listed building designed by F. H. Fowler & Hill and opened on 11 March 1882. It was rebuilt in 1907 (Blow and Billerey). The theater has a capacity of 550 seats on 3 levels. Queen's "A Kind of Magic" music video was filmed at Playhouse Theatre. It was also used as a recording studio and hosted live performances by Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and The Rolling Stones.
