It is the seat of Wapello County. The city is home to Indian Hills Community College. Wapello County Courthouse has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1981. The building was built in 1894 and designed by Foster & Liebbe. Canteen Lunch in the Alley, established in 1927 and located at 112 East 2nd Street, was the model for Roseanne's restaurant the Lanford Lunch Box in the sitcom "Roseanne".
