It is bordered by Hatfield and Williamsburg to the north, Easthampton to the south, Hadley to the east, and Westhampton to the west. The area was originally inhabited by the Pocumtuc. It was established as a city on September 5, 1883. Northampton Airport and Interstate 91 serve the area. The city is home to Smith College.
