Macau, or Macao, (澳門) is a city and a special administrative region in the People's Republic of China. The official name of the area is the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. The city is located on the shores of the South China Sea, right near the delta of the Pearl River. Macau is situated right opposite Hong Kong, overlooking Jiaokeng Bay. The distance from Macau to Hong Kong city center is estimated to be slightly over 40 miles and the city of Shenzhen is also 40 miles away from Macau but it is located to the northeast of the city center. Administratively, the city is divided into 7 districts and 4 parishes, with the districts of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, São Francisco Xavier, and Cotai being much larger in the area compared to all the other ones. All these three districts are located in the central part of the city and are the places where most of the landmarks, office and business centers, accommodation and shopping facilities, as well as principal cultural and social establishments, can be found. A large international transportation hub, Macau International Airport, is situated to the southeast of the city, about 5 miles away from the downtown area. To the west of Macau, it is possible to find a large green area, Zhu Xian Gong Yuan, which is almost as twice as large as the whole downtown area of Macau.
