It is a public university located in the city of Istanbul, and currently it has 12 campuses: Beyazit-Central, Laleli-Vezneciler, Avcilar, Capa, Vefa, Horhor, Cerrahpasa, Sisli, Kadikoy, Bahcekoy, Bakirkoy and Buyukcekmece. It is one of the oldest universities in the country, established in the middle of the 19th century as a higher educational facility based on a very old enlightening establishment founded in the 15th century by an Ottoman Sultan, Mehmet II. The modern day's Istanbul University is huge, with the total number of professors and staff reaching 6,000 people, and the total number of undergraduates exceeding 85,000 students. Beyazit-Central Campus is the main campus of the university and it is near the Beyazit Square.
