Ipswich, also known as the "Birthplace of American Independence", is a town in central Essex County, northeastern Massachusetts, United States, situated about 10 miles south of Newburyport and 30 miles north of Boston. It was founded by John Winthrop the Younger, settled in 1633, and incorporated on August 5, 1634. The town has a total area of 42.5 sq mi (110.1 km2). Ipswich is bordered by Boxford to the west, Rowley to the north, Topsfield, Hamilton, Gloucester, and Essex to the south. It is a coastal town with a number of tourist attractions such as Crane Beach, Steep Hill Beach, Pavilion Beach, Sandy Point State Reservation, Willowdale State Forest, Greenwood Farm, Brown Stocking Mill Historic District, South Green Historic District, Choate Bridge, Castle Hill on the Crane Estate, Ipswich Public Library, Daniel Boone Park, and Ipswich Museum. Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 1 serve the area.
