Great Bend is a city in Kansas, United States, situated at the intersection of U.S. Routes 281 and 56, to the north of the Arkansas River, in the central part of the state, and 250 miles west of Kansas City. It is the county seat of Barton County. The city was founded in 1871, incorporated in 1872, and named for the bend in the Arkansas River. It has a total area of 10.63 sq mi (27.54 km2). The city's economy is mainly based on agriculture. It is home to Barton Community College, which is located 3 miles northeast of the city's center. Great Bend Municipal Airport serves the area. Local attractions include Barton County Historical Society, Great Bend Sports Complex, Wetlands Waterpark, Great Bend Hike & Bike Trail, Veterans Memorial Park, Stoneridge Country Club, and Cheyenne Bottoms Refuge.
