Everglades National Park is a popular national park and the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States, located in the southernmost part of Florida, about 40 miles southwest of Miami. Some part of the protected area is covered with tropical forest. The local fauna is diverse and unique, with 25 varieties of orchids, 120 species of trees, and some endangered species like the manatee, the Florida panther, and the American crocodile. It was designated as a Biosphere Reserve in 1976 and listed as a World Heritage Site in 1979 by UNESCO. The park was also recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance on 4 June 1987.
