The city was incorporated on December 10, 1823 and has a total area of 4.60 sq mi (11.92 km2). US Route 78 and US Route 278 as well as a few subway stations serve the area. Decatur is home to several colleges and universities, including DeVry University, Emory University and Agnes Scott College.
