The city of Belfast is located on the Passagassawakeag River in southern Maine, United States. Drained by the Passagassawakeag River and situated on Belfast Bay, the city is the seat of Waldo County. It was incorporated as a city on August 17, 1850, and has a total area of 38.37 sq mi (99.37 km2). The area was originally inhabited by the Penobscot. The city is bordered by Searsport to the east, Morrill to the west, Northport to the south, Waldo and Swanville to the north, and Belmont to the southwest. Belfast Municipal Airport and U.S. Route 1 serve the area.
