Directed by Lasse Hallström, written for the screen by John Irving, and scored by Rachel Portman, the film stars Tobey Maguire, Charlize Theron, Michael Caine, Delroy Lindo, Paul Rudd, Jane Alexander, Kieran Culkin, Kathy Baker, Heavy D, Kate Nelligan, and Erykah Badu. It premiered on September 7, 1999 at the 56th Venice International Film Festival and was released on December 10, 1999 in the United States, won 2 Oscars: "Best Actor in a Supporting Role" (Michael Caine) and "Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published". The Cider House Rules was shot in Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire, USA. The exterior scenes of the orphanage took place at Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum in Lenox, while the interiors were filmed at Northampton State Hospital.
