Directed by Danny Boyle, produced by Andrew Macdonald, written for the screen by John Hodge, and based on the novel of the same name by English author Alex Garland, The Beach is an adventure romantic drama film that was released on February 11, 2000, by 20th Century Fox, and grossed $144.1 million against a $50 million budget. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tilda Swinton, Virginie Ledoyen, Guillaume Canet, and Robert Carlyle, the film is set in Thailand and follows the story of a young backpacker. The Beach was shot on the Thai island of Ko Phi Phi Le (เกาะพีพีเล). Filming also took place in Phuket and Bangkok, Thailand.
