Swades (or Motherland) is an Indian Hindi-language drama movie written and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Gayatri Joshi, Kishori Ballal, Smit Sheth, Lekh Tandon, Rajesh Vivek, Daya Shankar Pandey, and Farrukh Jaffar, the film is based on a real-life story of an Indian scientist who returns to his homeland. It was released on 17 December 2004, grossed ₹34.2 crores (US$4.8 million) worldwide, won the 2005 Awards of the International Indian Film Academy. Swades was shot in Wai and Menawali, Maharashtra, India. Filming also took place at Kennedy Space Center in Florida and Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, USA.
