The film grossed $1.056 billion worldwide against a $200–265 million budget and was nominated for 2 Academy Awards. It became the second-highest-grossing movie of 2016. Starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Mads Mikkelsen, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Riz Ahmed, Alan Tudyk, Jiang Wen, and Forest Whitaker, the film is a prequel to 1977's Star Wars. It is directed by Gareth Edwards, written by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy, and based on the characters created by George Lucas. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was shot at Pinewood Studios in England. Filming also took place in Maldives, Jordan, and Iceland. Reynisfjara was used to portray Planet Eadu, while the scenes for Planet Jedha took place in Wadi Rum.
