A Japanese-language American war drama movie Letters from Iwo Jima stars Ken Watanabe, Kazunari Ninomiya, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Ryō Kase, and Shidō Nakamura. Directed by Clint Eastwood, written for the screen by Iris Yamashita, and based on the book "Picture Letters from Commander in Chief" by Tadamichi Kuribayashi, the film portrays the battle of Iwo Jima during World War II from the perspective of the Japanese. It was released on December 9, 2006 in Japan and on December 20, 2006 in the United States. The film won an Oscar, and a nomination for "Best Motion Picture of the Year". Letters from Iwo Jima was shot in Japan, Iceland, and the US. The black beach scenes took place in Sandvík, Iceland.
