The city was founded in 1838, incorporated on February 4, 1843. It is home to Troy University, which was founded in 1887. It is one of the largest universities in Alabama. Troy University is the top employer in the city. It is also home to several private schools such as Pike Liberal Arts School. The city is sometimes affected by hurricanes and storms.
